A speakeasy does not earn its title unless you can sneak in through a hidden entrance concealed inside a more innocent business. In the case of Menaka, Siem Reap’s only speakeasy bar, the business is their own coffee shop, with another secret door from a side alley also granting access. The lounge is replete with Chesterfield sofas, a dimly lit chandelier and paintings of music stars from the golden era of Khmer rock, which echo the 1960’s music of this groovy and chic establishment. Of the sixteen signature house cocktails, the favourites include Samboh Sneah and the classic Double Rye Old Fashioned, all designed and crafted by prominent American mixologist Annemarie Sagoi. Infusions are made with fresh local products, notably Kampot pepper, chili, basil and jackfruit. Top shelf spirits such as high-end Japanese and Scottish whiskeys are also available, as is food from the café. A nightly Happy Hour from 6pm to 8pm affords a “buy two and get one free” deal on all cocktails.
