Here’s the ultimate experience for those with a penchant for pachyderms. Cambodia’s original and premier elephant sanctuary is located just out of Mondolkiri province’s capital of Sen Monorom, which can now be reached in under six hours. The not-for-profit ecotourism project helps provide free veterinary care and mahout-orientated education to families owning captive elephants, as well as employment opportunities to the locals. Visitors can “hang out” in the jungle with elephants on a half day ($55) or full day ($85) tour, or become a volunteer for a more extended period.
